St. John’s Wort Tea
How It Works: St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) has been used for more than 2000 years. The leaves and flowers of St. John’s Wort contain special glands that release a red oil when pinched. Recommended in the first century by the naturalist Pliny and the physician Dioscorides, St. John’s Wort has a long and varied history of use by the Romans and Greeks. In addition to its health benefits, St. John’s Wort was also believed to be a protector against evil. Early colonists introduced the plant to North America but found the Native Americans using the herb in much the same way as Europeans used the Old World plant. Today, St. John’s Wort is enjoying renewed interest by both herbalists and researchers.
Directions: The best way to make a good cup of tea is by the infusion method. Place one tea bag in a cup and add no more than 6 oz. of boiling water. Let steep for 3 minutes. Press the bag before removing to enhance flavor. Add honey to sweeten. This tea is decaffeinated.
