What is Hyaluronic Acid? Natural occurring hyaluronic acid is the most abundant non-sulfated glycosaminoglycan in the body known as hyaluronan found in copious amounts throughout the connective, epithelial, and neuro tissues. Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are unbranched polysaccharides (carbohydrate polymers) that consist of repeating disaccharide units. The disaccharide units generally are comprised as a first saccharide unit, one of two modified sugars known as N-acetylgalactosamine or N-acetylglucosamine. The second unit is Uronic acid sugar known as Glucuronic acid, which is one monosaccharide unit in the repeating disaccharide units involved with the formation of glycosaminoglycans. Hyaluronic Acid and Glucuronic Acid are negatively charged molecules with high viscosity and are located primarily on the surface of cells and throughout the extracellular matrix (ECM).
