Cholesterol is a solid waxy substance that enables cell membranes to maintain their integrity and provide an insulation shield around nerve fibers. In order to be transported in the bloodstream, cholesterol must be attached to carrier molecules. The liver manufactures two types of carrier molecules: LDL (low density lipoprotein) and HDL (high density lipoprotein).
